The Ferry Project working with Fenland District Council manage some properties under the Fenland Young Peoples Project for new mums or mums to be.

CC is a 20 year old single mum. She was referred to the new FYPP at Mill Close by FDC in July 2020. CC and her 4 month old baby had been living at her grandmother’s house. The only room available for her and the baby to stay was the lounge. CC was sleeping on the couch. This was a less than ideal situation for CC, her grandmother and a very young baby.

CC states “It was really hard living at my Nans house, she is elderly and found it hard having me and my baby living with her. I was scared when I was first referred to the FYPP but also relieved I would finally have my own space. CC was interviewed and was offered a flat within the project. CC had never lived independently before and definitely not as a new mum.

Support was put in place to ensure CC had the best opportunity to feel safe and secure in her new home. She was supported with claiming all her benefit entitlements. Support was given with her tenancy management too.

A specific support worker from P3 Charity was assigned to work with CC. “To have a support worker with me every step of the way was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble and she helped in every way”

CC thrived in her new environment, engaged with support staff and felt that she was finally able to relax a bit and enjoy being a new mum.

Her support worker was confident that CC could manage her own independent tenancy and an application was made to a social housing provider.

“I couldn’t believe that in the space of a few months I had gone from sleeping on my Nans sofa to getting my own house, the support was incredible”

In October 2020 CC moved to her permanent social housing property.

“I honestly can’t tell you how grateful I am, without the FYPP I would still be worried sick about mine and my baby’s future. I’m excited that I have a home to call my own and to celebrate my daughters 1st birthday in. I would not have believed I could say that 6 months ago. Thank you all so very much”
