British Food Fortnight at Ferry Project Cookery School
In honour of British Food Fortnight, we had our own Saturday Kitchen day last week with a Bangers and Mash session at The Ferry Project Cookery School. Our fabulous clients cooked up a delicious lunch with sausages from Gagen And Son Butchers, vegetables donated from supermarkets, gravy, giant yorkshires, with syrup sponge and custard to finish.
It was a fun social occasion where the clients shared jobs in the kitchen and then got to share the food they had made with everyone on site. Some sat around our beautiful farmhouse kitchen table, some took their food outside onto our plaza, but everyone ate, laughed, chatted, and shared stories. Another example of food bringing people together, making people happy and increasing confidence.
We also ran a pop-up Supper Club at Octavia Birthplace House, where again we celebrated British Food Fortnight with a Roasted Pepper Soup served with three different homemade breads, one of which was Beer Bread using our local Elgoods Brewery beer, that are located just across the river Nene from us. Again, our very British bangers and mash made an appearance. The meal was finished off with a Pear and Quince Shortbread Crumble with a Ginger Cream - it was very delicious.
We also made some apple cakes for the Reduce Food Waste events being run by Cambridgeshire County Council this week. We are looking forward to working with them further in helping to educate about reducing food waste in a variety of local schools in the coming months.
We were also in the town of March at the FACT Community Fridge where we completed another One Pot Wonders Class. These classes are free and are for those 65+ and are very popular for the cooking and for the cake and chat! If you haven’t done One Pot yet, live in Fenland and are over 65 then email Alison.crouch@ferryproject.org.uk or call 07778324250. The next course starts on Friday 17 October for 5 weeks and it is FREE so sign up now. We won’t be running it forever as our funding is for one year, we are halfway through! Do not miss out.
Alison was also live-streaming a cookery demonstration on the Virtual Village Hall platform where she demonstrated how to make three easy no-kneed breads that tashed as good as they looked. You can watch this by heading over to our YouTube Channel (just search 'Ferry Project' on YouTube).
