Understanding Homelessness: Answers to 5 Common Questions
We are often asked how people can help someone who is experiencing homelessness. As homelessness is a complex issue with no simple solutions, this can be difficult to answer - what is the right response for one person may be completely the wrong response for another. But we have done our best to provide some answers to five commonly asked questions below.
How can I help someone who is experiencing homelessness?
- Stop and Speak. Ask them their name. Listen to their story. Give words of encouragement. Offer them a hot drink or a sandwich.
- Provide them with information about homelessness services that are available – let them know about Ferry Project.
- If they are sleeping rough let StreetLink know about the situation – they will send local outreach teams to help. (Search: Street Link)
- If the person is in immediate danger, has a medical emergency or is very young, dial 999.
Should I give money to a person experiencing homelessness?
While giving money is a personal choice, donating to local charities and shelters is often more effective, as they can provide specialised, long-term support (e.g. housing, mental health services).
What should I avoid doing when I come across someone who is experiencing homelessness?
- Avoid Assumptions - Do not assume someone has a specific addiction or problem. Every person’s situation is different.
- Don’t take Photos - Do not take photos of people experiencing homelessness, as it is invasive and disrespectful.
- Respect Privacy - If they do not want to talk, respect their boundaries.
What are the main causes of homelessness?
- Lack of affordable housing.
- Relationship breakdowns or domestic abuse.
- Job loss or financial issues (e.g. rent increase).
- Mental health problems.
How can I help those experiencing homelessness in the long-term?
Volunteer - Local charities, shelters, and food banks often need volunteers to help with cooking, serving, or companionship.
Donate Money - Regular, small donations to reputable charities are very useful.
Campaign and Advocate - Support campaigns that work to change the policies that cause homelessness, such as increasing affordable housing.
Donate Goods - Contact Wisbech Donations Hub to ask what items they are currently accepting (e.g. cookers, wardrobes, bedding) before dropping them off.
