Beyond Four Walls: Why Community and Connection Matter

At Ferry Project, we believe that a home is more than a roof. It’s a sense of belonging. And belonging doesn’t grow in isolation — it grows through shared moments, shared meals, and the small adventures that remind us we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

That’s why community building sits at the heart of everything we do. Not as an afterthought, but as an essential part of the journey from crisis to independent living.

When someone first comes to us, they’re often exhausted — not just physically, but socially. The connections that most of us take for granted — a friend to share a laugh with, a familiar face at the table, a reason to get up and go somewhere — can feel very far away.

Research consistently shows that loneliness and social isolation are among the greatest barriers to recovery and wellbeing. It’s not enough to address housing alone. People need to feel seen, valued, and part of a community. That’s what our social activities and outings are designed to do.

And sometimes, the most meaningful moments come from the simplest things — like sitting down together for breakfast.

Recently, residents gathered at the Ferry Project Cookery School for a morning of ham, egg and chips — proper, no-fuss comfort food made and shared together.

The Cookery School is a special place. It’s where skills are built, confidence grows, and the act of preparing and sharing food becomes something quietly powerful. There’s a particular kind of ease that settles over a table when the food is good and the company is familiar. Conversations flow. People relax. For a while, the weight of difficult circumstances lifts a little.

That morning was exactly that — warm, unhurried, and full of good cheer.

After breakfast, a group of us did something we’d been able to see from Ferry Project all along — we crossed the River Nene and paid a visit to Peckover House, the National Trust’s beautiful Georgian townhouse sitting quietly along Wisbech’s North Brink.

Wisbech is a town of remarkable history, and Peckover House is one of its finest treasures. Yet for many people, it can feel like somewhere you pass rather than somewhere you visit. This was a chance to change that.

We wandered through the walled gardens — a hidden world of colour, calm, and greenery tucked behind the Georgian façade. It’s the kind of place that naturally slows you down and invites you to simply breathe.

Then came a well-earned treat: ice cream in the café. A small thing, perhaps, but these are the moments that stay with people — the lightness of an afternoon out, the pleasure of choosing a flavour, the laughter over who got the biggest scoop.

To round off a wonderful day, we were given a guided tour of the House itself, stepping through rooms full of history and character. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. For some, it was their first time inside — and that felt like something worth celebrating.

It would be easy to see a morning out as just a nice thing to do. But the impact runs deeper than that.

Outings like this build trust — between residents, and between residents and staff. They create shared memories and in-jokes, the invisible threads that weave a community together. They restore a sense of agency and enjoyment that hardship can strip away. They say, simply but powerfully: you deserve good days too.

For people rebuilding their lives, experiences like this matter enormously. They reduce isolation, boost mental wellbeing, strengthen confidence, and remind people that ordinary joys — a good meal, a beautiful garden, an afternoon adventure just across the river — are within reach.

And there’s something quietly symbolic about looking across the Nene at Peckover House for weeks or months, and then one day simply walking over the bridge and going in.

Community activities like this are made possible by the generous support of our donors, volunteers, and partners. If you’d like to help us create more moments like these — more meals shared, more doors opened, more afternoons that people will remember — please consider supporting Ferry Project.

Whether you donate, volunteer, or simply spread the word, you help us go beyond four walls.
