Hi, I’m Jennifer*. A few years ago, my partner left me and took my car and my son. He wouldn’t let me see my own child, which broke my heart. I moved in with my parents, but my dad was really abusive, and I couldn’t take it anymore. I left for my own safety, and ended up on the streets. I had no family to support me. I didn’t even want to eat. 

The Ferry Project took me in because of their Severe Weather Emergency Protocol, so I had a place to stay for the weekend. Then they found me a room in Destiny Haven. 

Before moving to Ferry I had a part-time job, but because of my homelessness and my low mood, I had to leave. 

The Ferry team supported me with so many things: 

• They started the journey to get me access to my son 

• They helped me to quit smoking 

• They arranged counselling for me, which has helped me to understand and deal with my emotions 

• They helped me to claim benefits while I gained skills and looked for new employment 

• They helped me budget, and explained my options for long-term housing 

The journey is just beginning, but I’ve already come so far. I have hope that soon I’ll be reunited with my son, and able to give him a good life in a home of my own.
